Luka Modrić’s dream of leading Croatia to a second consecutive World Cup final ended in the semi-final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina at Lusail Stadium. Having faced the Argentine forward numerous times, Modrić recalled the difficulties he experienced while bidding farewell to the football legend.
Messi and Modrić also shared a long rivalry in Spanish football, with Real Madrid and Barcelona facing each other in several El Clásico encounters. Messi ended his international career with a 3-0 win over Benin at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium. The 39-year-old forward marked his farewell with two assists and a penalty goal.
Modrić faced Messi 27 times across club and international football, recording 10 wins and five draws, while losing 12 matches against the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Speaking to Cadena SER, the AC Milan midfielder praised his longtime rival and recalled the difficult moments he endured against Barcelona during his time at Real Madrid.
“What more can I say about him? It is sad that he is retiring, but it is his decision and we have to respect it. He achieved incredible things with the national team. He won the World Cup, which was something he wanted very much,” Modrić said.
“He is one of the best players in the world, a unique player. It was a pleasure to watch him play, although I had to suffer a lot because of him for Croatia and Real Madrid. I wish him all the best,” the Croatian added.
