The family members of two youths arrested in Kushtia have accused the Detective Branch (DB) police of framing them in arms cases, claiming the two had no weapons when they were detained.

The allegation was made at a press conference held at the MA Razzaq Auditorium of Kushtia Press Club at around 2PM on Wednesday. Mithila Khatun, niece of arrested youth Ariful Islam Arif, read out a written statement at the event.

The two youths are Ariful Islam Arif of Shalghar Madhua village in Kumarkhali upazila and Abdullah, son of Rahan Ali of Durbachara village in Sadar upazila.

Mithila alleged that DB Sub-Inspector Rakib Uddin Jony picked up Abdullah from Durbachara Bazar in front of hundreds of people and detained Arif in a similar manner. She claimed that neither of them had any weapons at the time of their detention and that police did not display any weapons before people present at the market. She also claimed that video footage of the incident has been preserved.

She further alleged that the two youths had a long-standing dispute with Jahangir Kabir Liton of Durbachara village and Tiger Mamun of Darbeshpur village. According to her, DB police framed the two youths in arms cases at the instigation of the two men after taking them into custody from the market.

Mithila also alleged that Liton and Tiger Mamun had previously created fear in the area by using their influence and extorted large sums of money from people, threatening to implicate them in arms cases if they failed to pay. She claimed that they were currently in hiding on bail and were using the administration to harass ordinary people and tarnish the image of the government.

However, Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Faisal Mahmud rejected the allegation.

He said families could make various claims following an arrest or detention. He maintained that a DB team arrested the two youths with arms and ammunition after conducting a raid based on secret information and following due procedure.

He termed the family's claim that the youths had no weapons or ammunition at the time of their arrest "completely false and baseless."

Earlier, police said the two youths were detained in a special operation at the Jasim Bricks area of Banshitola in Kushtia Sadar on Tuesday (October 6), and that two pistols, two rounds of pistol ammunition and 16 rounds of shotgun ammunition were recovered from them.

Family members of the two youths, including Abdullah's wife, as well as local residents were present at the press conference.
