The family of the critically endangered nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), or blue bull, has expanded at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur, with the birth of four new calves.
The young additions are drawing significant attention and delight from visitors, especially children, as they play and move around with their mothers.
Park authorities confirmed that the calves were first spotted about a month ago with their mothers in the Deer Safari section of the park's Core Safari area. Information regarding the births was withheld initially to ensure the safety and uninterrupted monitoring of the newborns.
Md Raju Ahmed, Wildlife Inspector at the park, reported that all four calves are currently in good health. They are nursing regularly and engaging in natural social behaviours, including playing and running with other members of the nilgai herd. However, officials stated that the sex of the calves has not yet been determined.
"Our employees responsible for the Core Safari area first observed the calves about a month ago," said Md Tareq Rahman, Acting Officer and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) at the Safari Park. "We kept the matter confidential to prioritize their security. The sight of the four calves playing together has significantly enhanced the experience for our visitors, particularly children."
With these four new arrivals, the total population of nilgai in the Safari Park has risen to 13.
MKM Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (Current Charge) of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Dhaka Region, confirmed the births and stated that instructions have been issued to the park authorities to maintain heightened vigilance and supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of the newborns.
