A moving truck laden with jute sticks was completely gutted in a fire after coming into contact with overhead power lines in Pekua upazila of Cox's Bazar, causing estimated damages of Tk 10 lakh.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night at approximately 3:00 AM (November 5) in front of the Ideal School in the Kacharimora Station area of Shilkhali Union. Both the driver and helper managed to escape unhurt.
According to local sources, the consignment of jute sticks was brought from northern Bangladesh for local traders in Shilkhali, with a local businessman named Rukun managing the delivery. Typically, trucks carrying jute sticks park at Charapara Station overnight before unloading the cargo the following morning.
Locals noted that the truck was overloaded with jute sticks to a considerable height, requiring careful navigation around low-hanging electrical lines. However, the driver, being unfamiliar with the route, continued toward Kacharimora without stopping at Charapara Station.
As the vehicle reached Ideal School, the upper portion of the cargo contacted overhead power lines, snapping a wire and sparking a sudden fire.
Upon noticing the flames, the driver stopped the vehicle, allowing himself and his assistant to jump to safety. A unit from the Pekua Fire Service arrived shortly after receiving the call and brought the fire under control. However, the truck and most of the cargo were reduced to ashes before the firefighters arrived.
Nurul Hossain, a leader of the local trader association, confirmed that the vehicle and all goods were completely destroyed, adding that the safe escape of the driver and helper was the only relief in the accident.
