An Indian national, Rabiul Islam, was placed on a fresh three-day remand on Thursday in a case filed with Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka on allegations of espionage.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Pias passed the order after the investigation officer, Inspector Md Nur Alam of the Detective Branch’s Ramna Division, sought a seven-day remand.
According to the prosecution, Islam has been remanded several times since his arrest on September 23. With Thursday’s order, he has so far spent 18 days in police remand.
Police allege that Islam had entered Bangladesh more than 15 times on tourist and business visas over the past 10-12 years and had used business activities as a cover for espionage.
The police further claimed that he attempted to collect and transmit photographs of sensitive government installations and restricted areas, as well as confidential government documents and information, to a foreign intelligence agency.
The remand petition also alleged that Islam assisted agents of the foreign intelligence agency. Police sought further custody to identify his alleged financiers, patrons and associates.
The allegations remain under investigation, and no conviction has been established.
