Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has responded to criticism on social media over including Mohammad Tarek Rahman, member secretary of the Amjonotar Party, in his state visit to Japan, saying discussions about the country’s pressing problems have been overshadowed by questions about the delegation member’s contribution and the use of public funds.
He made the remarks at an exchange of views with expatriate Bangladeshis organised by the Bangladeshi community at Hotel New Otani in Tokyo on Wednesday.
“I was quite surprised to see so much discussion on social media over the past two days about bringing Amjonotar’s Tarek with us. People are saying he has no contribution and that bringing him here is wasting government money,” the prime minister said.
Referring to the country’s existing challenges, he added, “There are so many problems in the country, but I do not see discussions about them.”
Speaking about reform, Tarique said improving the lives of working-class people was as important as reforms discussed in air-conditioned rooms.
Politicians seek votes from the people, he said, adding that his greatest priority was to make life a little easier and more comfortable for ordinary working people.
Before departing for Japan, Amjonotar Party member secretary Mohammad Tarek Rahman announced on social media that he was travelling abroad for the first time with the prime minister.
“Alhamdulillah, I am travelling abroad for the first time in my life, heading to Japan with Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Gratitude to Almighty Allah. Thanks and love to everyone,” he wrote.
His announcement drew criticism on social media, including comments from senior leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
