Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are set to face new US charges over alleged torture of American citizens detained in Venezuela during Maduro’s rule.
The charges could be announced as early as Thursday, according to people familiar with the investigation. US prosecutors are examining allegations that more than a dozen American citizens were wrongfully detained in Venezuelan prisons and subjected to abuse.
The allegations include waterboarding, electric shocks, threats of sexual abuse, the use of mind-altering drugs and prolonged solitary confinement. Investigators are also considering charges against several others allegedly involved in the abuse.
Maduro and Flores were previously charged in the United States in connection with drug-trafficking allegations and have pleaded not guilty. Flores is scheduled to appear at a hearing on Thursday, while her lawyers are seeking home detention pending trial.
