Chattogram is set to usher in a new era of eco-friendly urban mobility as Bangladesh's first dedicated cycle track is scheduled for official inauguration on Friday (October 9).
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain announced the development on Thursday (October 8) while inspecting final preparations along Airport Road, one day prior to the launch.
During the inspection, the Mayor reviewed the track's design, aesthetic quality, and safety features alongside civic officials, issuing instructions to ensure a safe, user-friendly environment for cyclists and pedestrians.
"We are working systematically to transform Chattogram into a modern, clean, livable, and eco-friendly city," Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said. "The inauguration of the country's first cycle track marks a new chapter in Chattogram's urban management. This is not merely a path for bicycles, but a symbol of our progression toward healthy, sustainable urban living."
The project was executed under the CCC's "Chattogram Airport Road Expansion and Physical Infrastructure Development" project. As part of the overhaul, the 2.2-kilometer stretch of Airport Road was expanded into a four-lane thoroughfare featuring sidewalks on both sides, a median curb island, landscaped walkways, and the integrated cycling track.
Highlighting the environmental and public health benefits, the Mayor noted that dedicated cycling lanes enhance safety for commuters, encourage physical activity, and reduce both traffic congestion and air pollution. He urged the youth to adopt cycling as a primary mode of transit and affirmed that CCC will implement similar bike-friendly infrastructure projects in the future.
CCC officials confirmed that the cycle track will be opened for public use immediately following Friday's formal opening ceremony.
Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Additional Chief Engineer Borhan Uddin, and Executive Engineer Ashikul Islam accompanied the Mayor during the site inspection.
