Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has clarified that it has no plans to permanently remove the memorial plaques bearing the names of those killed and involved in the July uprising from the Mirpur-10 roundabout. Instead, the corporation plans to reinstall the plaques in a more attractive and visually prominent manner after renovation work is completed.
The DNCC urged the public not to be misled by misinformation and rumours circulating on social media over the temporary removal of the plaques. The clarification came on Friday after confusion spread on social media following the inauguration of a July graffiti restoration initiative organised by the DNCC at Mirpur-10.
The police box at the Mirpur-10 roundabout was damaged during an undesirable incident surrounding a recent drive to remove illegal structures in the area. Following the incident, the DNCC undertook initiatives to repair the police box and improve the overall appearance of the surrounding area.
As part of the ongoing renovation work, the memorial plaques attached to the walls of the police box have been temporarily removed to facilitate repairs. The DNCC said the decision was taken under the direction of its Administrator, Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, as part of the renovation process.
According to the corporation, there is no intention to permanently remove the plaques. Rather, under the administrator's plan, they will be redesigned and reinstalled at the Mirpur-10 roundabout in a more attractive and prominent location.
The new arrangement is expected to make the plaques more visible to pedestrians and members of the public, while ensuring that the contributions and sacrifices of those associated with the July uprising are remembered with due respect.
