Prominent human rights campaigner Navanethem "Navi" Pillay has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her dedicated contributions towards advancing international law and human rights worldwide.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced her name on Friday (October 9) at approximately 3:00 PM Bangladesh Time.
In its citation, the committee stated that Pillay was honoured for her tireless efforts to promote peace, uphold international law, and champion fundamental human rights globally across decades of legal service.
Her win follows last year's laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who received the peace prize for her peaceful movement to restore democratic rights and lead Venezuela away from authoritarian rule.
Pillay joins a distinguished list of peace laureates that includes Malala Yousafzai, who became the youngest recipient at age 17 in 2014, and Joseph Rotblat, the oldest recipient to receive the award at age 86 in 1995.
