English county cricket club Essex have terminated their contract with Bangladesh-origin batter Robin Das after he appeared in court on Friday (October 9) over allegations of raping a woman twice.

The 24-year-old was charged with two counts of rape in July. He was arrested in August 2025 after a report of a woman being raped in Brixton in March 2024.

Das appeared at Inner London Crown Court on Friday and was granted conditional bail ahead of his trial, which is scheduled to begin in January 2028.

Essex confirmed that the club was aware of his court appearance and was treating the matter seriously, but declined to comment further on the ongoing legal proceedings.

The club said it had terminated his contract because he would be unable to fulfil his playing commitments and suspension requirements before the end of the 2026 season. It added that the decision was separate from the ongoing legal process.

Das made his debut for Essex in 2020. He also attracted attention in Bangladesh because of his family roots in Sunamganj, where his father, Mridul Kanti Das, is from.

The right-handed batter played two matches for Dhaka Dominators in the 2023 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Although his ancestral home is in Sunamganj, Das was born and raised in Leytonstone, England.
