The government has begun the process of recruiting 5,000 doctors to address staff shortages in the health sector, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhith has said.
The government is also working to establish pathology laboratories at upazila health complexes, ensure doctors’ attendance at their workplaces and strengthen disease prevention programmes.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a workshop reviewing progress in the Expanded Programme on Immunisation and other health programmes at a hotel in Rajshahi on Saturday.
The state minister said around 40 per cent of posts in the country’s health sector remain vacant, making it difficult for hospitals to manage patient pressure. However, he said around 80 to 90 per cent of doctors are currently attending their workplaces.
He added that establishing pathology laboratories and ensuring the proper functioning of equipment at the upazila level would facilitate diagnosis and reduce patients’ suffering.
Muhith said more than two crore children had been vaccinated under ongoing immunisation and catch-up programmes to prevent measles.
To combat dengue, the government has strengthened cleanliness drives, mosquito and larva control measures, and training for doctors. Around 2,000 doctors have already received specialised training to treat dengue patients, he added.
The state minister said disease prevention was more effective than treatment after illness develops. The government is therefore prioritising preventive healthcare through vaccination, cleanliness initiatives and public awareness campaigns.
The workshop was chaired by Rajshahi Divisional Health Director Dr Md Habibur Rahman.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr Prabhat Chandra Biswas, Rajshahi Medical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Zawadul Haque and Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Md Mahfuzur Rahman Riton attended the event as special guests.
