Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has called on citizens to act responsibly to find a lasting solution to waterlogging in the city.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of an awareness programme for students and parents at the Theatre Institute Chattogram on Saturday.
The mayor said infrastructure projects alone could not solve waterlogging. Residents must keep canals, drains and waterways clean and stop dumping waste indiscriminately.
He also urged citizens to protest against illegal occupation of footpaths, cycle tracks and public spaces, stressing that protecting the city’s environment and public property was a shared responsibility.
The mayor called for joint efforts by students, parents, teachers and community members to build a “green, clean, healthy and safe city”.
Under the initiative, around 52,000 students from 72 educational institutions run by the city corporation and their families will be involved in awareness activities. The programme includes cleanliness drives, leaflet distribution, competitions and regular parent meetings.
