Hurricane Isaias has killed at least four people and left around 670,000 customers without electricity across four US states after making landfall in Florida as a Category 2 storm on Saturday, while authorities warned of continued flooding and tornado risks.
Two of the victims died after trees fell on homes, according to local media and authorities. The hurricane weakened into a post-tropical cyclone after striking the Florida coast, but the National Hurricane Center warned of continuing risks from flash floods, damaging winds and tornadoes across parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
According to electricity tracker PowerOutage.us, around 420,000 customers in Florida, 190,000 in Alabama, 43,000 in Georgia and 17,000 in Mississippi remained without power by midday Saturday.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said restoring electricity was a priority, with around 16,000 utility workers prepared to respond to the storm. Separately, the Pacific storm Rachel left another 7,000 people without electricity in California.
The storm also disrupted energy production in the Gulf of Mexico, where around 69 per cent of oil output and 57 per cent of natural gas production remained shut down on Saturday, according to the Marine Minerals Administration.
Energy companies Shell and Chevron began redeploying workers to offshore platforms and taking steps to restore production. The US Energy Department also authorised an emergency exchange of up to four million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to address supply disruptions caused by the hurricane.
US President Donald Trump described the storm preparations as “under control”. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said emergency declarations had been approved in Florida and Alabama to ensure federal resources were available for the response.
In the coastal city of Pensacola, damage caused by the storm led to drinking water shortages and the suspension of commercial flights at the airport. Authorities continued assessing the damage and restoring essential services.
