Bangladesh moved into a commanding position against Afghanistan in the one-off Test on Sunday, extending their overall lead to 329 runs at the close of the third day after reaching 223 for six in their second innings.

The visitors' progress was built on a remarkable morning spell from Hasan Mahmud, who became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a Test hat-trick. His five-wicket haul, complemented by Ebadot Hossain's four wickets, helped dismiss Afghanistan for 240 in their first innings.

Afghanistan had resumed at 211 for four but lost their remaining six wickets for just 29 runs. Hasan finished with five for 55, while Ebadot claimed four for 56, giving Bangladesh a 106-run first-innings advantage after their own total of 346.

Captain Rahmat Shah offered the strongest resistance for Afghanistan, remaining unbeaten on 105, while Abdul Malik contributed 62. However, the lower order could not withstand Bangladesh's pace attack once the visitors found a breakthrough.

Bangladesh's second innings began with a few setbacks. Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque fell as the visitors slipped to 53 for three, giving Afghanistan an opportunity to fight back.

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim responded with half-centuries, rebuilding the innings and strengthening Bangladesh's position. Shanto made 82, while Mushfiqur scored 58, helping the visitors extend their lead beyond 300.

Bangladesh eventually closed the day at 223 for six after 72 overs, with Litton Das unbeaten on five and Mehidy Hasan Miraz yet to score.

With four wickets remaining, Bangladesh will look to add further runs on the fourth morning before challenging Afghanistan to chase a substantial target.

Hasan's historic achievement and Bangladesh's growing advantage have placed the visitors in a strong position, although they will need to finish the job with the ball to secure victory.
