The High Court has published the full text of its verdict directing Grameen Kalyan to pay Tk 666 crore in taxes to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The two separate judgments were published on Monday (October 12), after being signed by a bench comprising Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Rezaul Karim.
On September 10, the bench dismissed two writ petitions filed by Grameen Kalyan challenging the NBR’s tax reassessment for five fiscal years from 2012-13 to 2016-17.
The tax demand totals around Tk 666 crore. The NBR can pursue recovery of the amount following the dismissal of the petitions, according to lawyers.
Grameen Kalyan, a non-profit social business organisation founded by Nobel laureate and former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, had challenged the legality of the tax demands in 2017.
Barristers Abdullah Al Mamun and Fida M Kamal represented Grameen Kalyan in the proceedings.
