Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury has said artists play an important role in preserving the memories of the July Uprising.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a daylong art camp titled “Memory Against Forgetting” at the July Uprising Memorial Museum on Monday.

Culture adviser to the prime minister Dr Zahed Ur Rahman and museum Director General Ehsan Mahmud attended the event.

Nitai Roy Chowdhury said students, workers, daily wage earners and people from different walks of life joined the movement, and their collective struggle and sacrifices led to the fall of the authoritarian regime.

Zahed Ur Rahman said the art camp offered artists an opportunity to portray the uprising, adding that the museum would preserve their artworks.

Ehsan Mahmud said holding the camp at the former Ganabhaban, once a centre of authoritarian rule, carried special significance and reflected efforts to resist attempts to erase history.
