CHATTOGRAM, OCT 12: A discussion meeting and cultural programme were held at Buddhijibi Chattar (Intellectuals’ Square) of Chittagong University (CU) on Monday to mark the 36th anniversary of Angon, a cultural organisation of the university.
CU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Amin attended the programme, stressing that cultural engagement broadens perspectives and fosters an open-minded and humane outlook.
He said a vibrant university should be a hub not only for music, dance, recitation and cultural events but also for research, teaching, free thinking and freedom of expression. A university truly comes alive when all forms of creative activity come together, he added.
Al-Amin also emphasised that cultural organisations must remain free from political partisanship and narrow-mindedness, warning that their natural growth could be hindered if they became confined by partisan interests.
“I hope Angon’s journey will become even stronger, and that everyone associated with it will contribute to the cultural movement from their respective positions, further enriching the cultural environment of the University of Chittagong,” he said.
Professor Dr Nasir Uddin (Rahman Nasir Uddin), president of Angon, chaired the event.
A commemorative volume was unveiled, while the organisation’s General Secretary Mahbub Alam presented an overview of its activities and history.
The discussion was followed by cultural performances. The anniversary was celebrated through a day-long programme that also included a rally.
Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Professor Dr Mohammad Saleh Jahur, Angon’s founding General Secretary Bhaskar Ranjan Saha, faculty members from various departments, former members of the organisation, invited guests and students attended the programme.
