Man killed in attack over calf eating straw

A man was beaten to death allegedly by his neighbours over a dispute after his calf ate straw from a neighbour’s pile in Manda upazila of Naogaon on Tuesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Daraj Uddin Mondal of Tulshirampur village under Kashopara Union. His wife, Sathi Begum, 25, and brother, Saiful Islam, 30, were injured in the incident.

The incident took place around 6:00 PM on Tuesday. The injured were rescued and admitted to Manda Upazila Health Complex.

According to locals, Shahidul’s calf ate straw from a pile belonging to his neighbour Ibrahim Hossain on Tuesday evening. The incident triggered an argument between the two sides.

At one stage, people from the opposing side, led by Ibrahim Hossain, allegedly attacked Shahidul with locally made weapons. He died at the scene after being beaten repeatedly.

When Shahidul’s wife, Sathi Begum, and brother, Saiful Islam, tried to save him, they were also beaten and injured.

Following the incident, the accused, including Ibrahim Hossain and Moazzem Hossain, along with their associates, went into hiding.

Manda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Afzal Hossain confirmed the incident. He said police recovered the body from the scene and arranged for an autopsy.

Police are working to arrest those involved in the attack, he added.
