The government has approved the purchase of 70,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) and Saudi Arabia’s SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company at a cost of Tk 364.55 crore to meet agricultural demand.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the two separate proposals at a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury at the Secretariat on Monday (October 19). The purchases will be financed from the agricultural subsidy budget.
Under the approved proposals, Bangladesh will buy 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea from KAFCO for Tk 151.30 crore, while 40,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea will be imported from SABIC for Tk 213.24 crore.
The government has estimated national urea fertiliser demand at 30 lakh tonnes for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The latest purchases are part of its efforts to maintain supplies and meet the needs of the agricultural sector.
