JAMALPUR, Oct 19: A foundation stone has been laid for a 278.30-metre-long RCC girder bridge over a branch of the Jamuna River at Char Sarishabari in Satpoa Union of Sarishabari Upazila of the district.

Faridul Kabir Talukder Shamim, MP, and member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Water Resources, laid the foundation stone on Monday afternoon.

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is constructing the bridge at a cost of around Tk 40 crore under the Important Bridges Construction on Rural Roads-2 project. It is being built over the river on the Aramnagar GC-Ghoramara Bazar road.

According to the LGED, the bridge will ease the long-standing sufferings of more than 50,000 people, including around 20,000 residents of the river-surrounded and remote char areas of Satpoa Union, six unions of neighbouring Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj and several villages in Madarganj Upazila.

The bridge is expected to improve communication and facilitate the transportation of agricultural products to markets.

Jamalpur LGED Executive Engineer Mohammad Ramzan Ali presided over the foundation stone-laying ceremony.

Sarishabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Afroza Afsana, Upazila Engineer Golam Kibria Tamal, Upazila BNP Senior Vice-President Professor Abdul Awal, Municipal BNP General Secretary Zahurul Islam Pintu and local dignitaries also spoke at the programme.
