Police have filed a case against 79 people over a rally organised by the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League in Shahrashti upazila of Chandpur, arresting two of them.

The case was filed with Shahrashti Model Police Station on Tuesday night, with 19 people named, including banned Chhatra League leader Sajjad Hossain Sujon as the prime accused. Another 60 unidentified people were also accused.

According to police, the rally was held early Tuesday on the Chitoshi-Mudaffarganj road in the upazila under the leadership of Sajjad Hossain Sujon. The participants welcomed the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.

Sajjad later posted a video of the rally on his Facebook account around noon. After verifying the incident, police launched a drive to arrest those involved.

In the evening, police arrested Sohel Rana and Sakil, leaders of the Chhatra League’s Raishree North Union unit, during a raid in the Jadavpur area of the upazila.

Shahrashti Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mir Mahbubur Rahman said the banned Chhatra League took advantage of police deployment for Durga Puja security to hold the rally.

Police took immediate action after learning about the incident, he said, adding that drives to arrest the other accused were underway.
