Stargazers and night-sky enthusiasts in Bangladesh will have the opportunity to witness several spectacular celestial events until October 31 as clear autumn skies set in.

With reduced rainfall and cloud cover, the crisp atmosphere provides ideal conditions for observing stars, planets, and meteor showers across the country.

Orionid meteor shower

The chief attraction during the latter half of October is the Orionid meteor shower, created by dust particles left behind by the famous Halley's Comet. The meteor shower will reach its peak during the late hours of October 21 and 22.

Around October 21-22, the moon will cross its first quarter phase. Although moonlight will be present after evening, the moon will set before midnight, leaving the sky dark from late night until dawn. Under clear conditions, observers can expect to see 15 to 20 bright meteors per hour.

Presence of Saturn

Following its opposition in September, Saturn will continue to shine brightly in the evening sky throughout late October. Shortly after sunset, the planet will be easily visible in the southeastern sky, moving overhead during the first half of the night before setting in the west after midnight.

Saturn will glow with a steady, yellowish-gold light. Using binoculars or a small telescope, observers can clearly view its rings and its largest moon, Titan.

Venus in evening sky, Jupiter late at night

During the last two weeks of October, Venus will rise in the western sky immediately after sunset as the brightest object on the horizon. It will remain visible above the horizon for one to one and a half hours after twilight and can be seen with the naked eye. Meanwhile, Jupiter will begin rising in the eastern sky between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM in the last week of October, shining intensely through the night.

Lunar phases and planetary conjunctions

The moon will gradually progress toward its full phase during the second half of the month. On the nights of October 25 and 26, the annual Hunter's Moon will illuminate the night sky with a golden-white glow. Just before the full moon, on October 24, the moon and Saturn will appear close to each other in the night sky.

Autumn constellations

Famous autumn constellations will bloom across the evening sky during late October. Around October 18 to 20, before moonrise or after moonset, the Andromeda Galaxy can be seen as a faint smudge of light using binoculars from dark-sky locations.

In the east-northeastern sky, the distinctive square pattern of the Pegasus constellation will be visible, while Cassiopeia will shine brightly in the northern sky, forming a clear "W" shape.
