Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension by the Disciplinary Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following a confrontation with Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.
The committee rejected an appeal filed by Real Betis against the direct red card issued to the Uruguayan midfielder during Sunday’s La Liga fixture, according to Spanish daily 'AS'.
Bernal was sent off following a heated exchange with Yamal shortly after Betis reduced their deficit to 3-2.
Under Spanish football disciplinary regulations, the incident was categorized as an assault, triggering the statutory four-match ban for such offenses. As a result of the ruling, Bernal is set to miss several crucial upcoming matches, including Real Betis' Copa del Rey fixtures and the Seville derby.
Real Betis confirmed they intend to appeal the suspension to the RFEF Appeals Committee, maintaining that the four-game penalty is disproportionate to the incident on the pitch.
In addition to Bernal's suspension, the disciplinary committee imposed a two-match ban on Real Betis Sporting Director Manu Fajardo for unsportsmanlike behavior. Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini received a formal warning after criticizing the refereeing decisions following the red card.
