Lionel Scaloni has reportedly reached an agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to continue as head coach of the national team, potentially extending his tenure through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

According to Spanish-language sports media, the World Cup-winning coach and the AFA have agreed on the key terms of a new contract. The deal is expected to follow a two-plus-two-year format, with an initial term running until the 2028 Copa América and a possible extension through the 2030 World Cup, subject to agreement between both parties.

Argentine media reports suggest the agreement could be formally announced during the November international break. The AFA is also keen to retain Scaloni’s existing coaching staff as it prepares for the next phase of the national team’s development.

Scaloni had previously cast doubt on his future following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. However, the latest reports indicate that negotiations have progressed, with the financial terms and sporting plans for the next cycle largely settled.

Since taking charge of Argentina in 2018, Scaloni has overseen one of the most successful periods in the country’s football history. Under his leadership, Argentina won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, ending a 36-year wait for the world title. The team also won the 2024 Copa América.

If the extension through 2030 is finalised, Scaloni could lead Argentina into a third consecutive World Cup under his management, overseeing the team’s transition into a new era.

Argentina are scheduled to play two international friendlies in November. The three-time world champions will face Uruguay on November 13 before taking on Costa Rica on November 17 at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium in Córdoba.

The matches are expected to provide an opportunity to assess the squad and prepare for the challenges ahead as Argentina look to sustain their success in the post-Lionel Messi era.
