Sri Lanka pulled off an unbelievable run chase to defeat England by two wickets in a high-scoring Tri-Series thriller on Thursday (October 22), successfully overhauling a mammoth 430-run target in the final over at Rawalpindi.

The victory marks the second-highest successful run chase in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket, overshadowing a record-breaking fastest double century by England's Harry Brook.

Needing eight runs off the final over, Janith Liyanage took a single off the first ball delivered by Josh Tongue. Tongue then stirred hopes of an English victory by bowling out Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga on consecutive deliveries. Facing the hat-trick ball, Asitha Fernando managed a single to third man, leaving Sri Lanka needing six runs off the last two balls.

Unfazed, Liyanage smashed Tongue over the boundary line to seal an extraordinary win with two balls to spare. Liyanage remained unbeaten on 61 off just 27 balls.

Chasing the daunting total of 430, Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start, losing two quick wickets for just 24 runs. Kamindu Mendis was bowled by Josh Tongue for 18, while skipper Kusal Mendis was run out without facing a ball.

However, Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake steadied the innings with a 166-run partnership for the third wicket. Avishka missed out on a century when he was caught and bowled by Craig Overton for 97, leaving Sri Lanka at 190 for three.

Rathnayake continued the charge alongside Dasun Shanaka, adding another 133 runs. Rathnayake reached his century before falling to Sam Curran for a brilliant 130, breaking the partnership at 323 for four.

Shanaka also suffered heartbreak near the milestone, falling for 97 at 363 for five. Sahan Arachchige contributed a quick 13 runs to help push the total past 400 before being dismissed at 406 for six, leaving Liyanage to guide the team home in a dramatic finish.

For England, Josh Tongue bagged three wickets, Sam Curran took two, while Craig Overton and Liam Dawson claimed one apiece.

Earlier, batting first after losing the toss, England posted a formidable total of 429 for four in their allotted 50 overs, driven by a blistering double century from Harry Brook.

Coming in at number four, Brook smashed the fastest double century in ODI history off just 114 balls, hitting 21 boundaries and 10 sixes before falling off the final ball of the innings for 202. He became the 11th batter to score an ODI double ton, recording the 14th instance overall.

Openers Tom Banton and Ben Duckett laid the foundation with a 74-run stand before Wellalage dismissed Banton (50) and trapped Duckett (29) lbw to leave England at 85 for two. Joe Root then anchored a 159-run partnership with Brook, scoring 69 off 66 balls before being dismissed by Asitha Fernando.

Following Root's departure, Brook accelerated drastically, moving from 100 off 75 balls to 150 off 97 balls, and reaching 200 off 114 deliveries. Will Jacks provided late fireworks, remaining unbeaten on 66 off 30 balls with eight fours and three sixes.

For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage picked up two wickets, while Asitha Fernando and Janith Liyanage claimed one each.
