The official website of Bangladesh Bank remained inaccessible for the third consecutive day on Saturday as a precautionary measure following a global cybersecurity alert.
However, interbank connectivity and routine operations between the central bank and commercial banks remain unaffected.
Bangladesh Bank shut down its website on Thursday afternoon after receiving a global cybersecurity warning. IT officials at the central bank are currently working to monitor security risks and reinforce the website's protection.
Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and Spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, stated that the website will not be reactivated until full security is ensured. He reiterated that operational links between the central bank and commercial banks are functioning normally. He did not, however, specify a exact timeline for when the website would be restored.
As of 8:00 AM on Saturday, the website was still inaccessible to users, displaying a maintenance notice upon access attempts.
Concerns over global cybersecurity mounted after a critical vulnerability was identified in PHP, a widely used programming language. Cybersecurity firms Calif and Wiz detected the security flaws using artificial intelligence technology. In light of the situation, the government has also issued a alert regarding global cyber vulnerabilities.
Earlier in 2016, Bangladesh Bank fell victim to a major cyber heist when hackers siphoned off $101 million from its account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, leading to the resignation of then-Governor Atiur Rahman.
