Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has warned that legal action will be taken and goods seized from shops illegally occupying roads and footpaths, saying the authorities will no longer issue warnings before taking action.
He made the announcement on Saturday while addressing a special mosquito-control and cleanliness drive organised by the DSCC as part of its weekly 'Cleaning Day' programme. The campaign was conducted simultaneously across all 75 wards under the city corporation.
Abdus Salam said illegal hawkers and makeshift shops were major contributors to traffic congestion, indiscriminate waste disposal and obstructions to pedestrian movement.
“Dhaka residents, as well as the city corporation, want relief from these hardships. There can be no justification for occupying roads and footpaths in the name of humanitarian considerations.''
He warned that shops operating outside the rules set by the DSCC would face confiscation of goods and legal action.
Regarding efforts to clear roads and footpaths in the Newmarket area, the DSCC administrator said another eviction drive would be conducted there next week.
He made it clear that street hawkers would not be allowed to occupy roads under any circumstances.
Emphasising the importance of cleanliness in preventing dengue and protecting the environment, Salam said stagnant water should not be allowed to remain for more than three days.
He added that awareness rallies and public campaigns would continue alongside cleanliness operations to protect the capital's environment, control air pollution and ease traffic congestion.
During the campaign, Salam also discussed the relocation of a secondary transfer station (STS) from in front of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Malibagh.
He said the facility had been relocated at the request of the CID authorities in the public interest, and the vacated site had been arranged for parking.
Construction of a new STS to manage waste from the surrounding area is underway and is expected to be completed within October, he added.
The day-long cleanliness drive began at the CID headquarters and proceeded through Shantinagar, Kakrail and Nayapaltan before concluding in Fakirapul.
During the campaign, the DSCC administrator inspected waste removal operations and the removal of illegal shops along the route.
Regular city corporation sanitation workers and mosquito-control teams took part in the programme, alongside local residents. Public announcements and awareness rallies were also held across the wards to encourage community participation in keeping the city clean.
