Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi forces towards Taif and Yanbu on Saturday (October 24), as authorities issued security alerts in Mecca, Jeddah and other areas of the kingdom.
Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki said the missiles targeting the two cities had been intercepted and destroyed, according to Reuters.
Saudi Civil Defense issued warnings of potential danger through the National Early Warning Platform for Mecca Province and the governorates of Jeddah, Taif and Yanbu. About 10 minutes later, authorities announced that the danger had passed in the affected areas.
Residents were urged to follow official safety instructions, move to the nearest safe place when necessary and avoid gatherings and filming during the alerts.
The interceptions came amid renewed hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. The coalition had earlier reported intercepting another ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh.
