Cox’s Bazar has seen a surge in tourists during the five-day holiday for Durga Puja and the weekly weekend, with around 90 per cent of hotel and motel rooms booked.

The influx began on Tuesday, October 20, the first day of the holiday, with large crowds gathering at different points along the sea beach. Tourism businesses expect more than 700,000 visitors to arrive in the district over the five days.

Although the peak tourist season in Cox’s Bazar usually begins in November, the Puja holiday has brought an early rise in visitor numbers this year. Tourists from different parts of the country are visiting to enjoy the sea, pleasant weather and scenic surroundings.

Visitors were seen enjoying the beach with family and friends on Tuesday afternoon. Many were swimming in the sea, walking along the shore and taking photographs, while horse rides, beach bikes and jet skis added to the activity.

Beachside businesses said visitor numbers had increased since Tuesday morning, with local residents also joining the crowds. Favourable weather has further boosted activity along the beach.

With the growing number of tourists, authorities have strengthened security measures at the beach. Lifeguards and security personnel are maintaining regular surveillance and advising visitors to follow safety instructions while swimming.

Members of Sea-Safe Lifeguard will be on duty at Laboni, Sugandha and Kalatali points to help ensure safe bathing.

Sea-Safe Lifeguard rescuer Md Selim Uddin said safety measures had been given greater importance during the holiday rush. He urged tourists to exercise caution and follow lifeguards' instructions to avoid accidents.

Abul Kashem Sikder, president of the Cox’s Bazar Hotel-Motel Owners Association, said hundreds of thousands of tourists had already arrived at the start of the holiday.

He expected an average of 150,000 visitors a day, taking the total to more than 700,000 over five days. Cox’s Bazar has more than 500 hotels, motels and cottages, around 90 per cent of whose rooms have been booked, he added.

Tourist numbers have also increased at other attractions across the district, including Marine Drive, Himchhari Waterfall, Dariyanagar, Inani and Patuartek.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ohidur Rahman said tourist police and district police personnel were working across the sea beach and other tourist spots to ensure visitors' safety.

Md Mahmudur Rahman Sayem, assistant commissioner of the district administration's tourism cell and an executive magistrate, said visitor safety and proper management of the tourism sector remained top priorities.

He said the administration was monitoring tourist areas to prevent overcharging and harassment.
