Tourists have gathered in Tetulia of Panchagarh with hopes of viewing snow-capped Kanchenjunga, though clouds and fog have kept the mountain peak out of sight.
Despite failing to catch a glimpse of Kanchenjunga, visitors are enjoying local tea gardens, the Mahananda River, and historical sites across the upazila.
Crowds of tourists were seen at the Tetulia Dak Bungalow Picnic Corner on Friday morning. Many stayed overnight to view the mountain at dawn, but the peak remained hidden behind heavy cloud cover.
Almas and Rebeka, a tourist couple from Rajshahi, said that although they missed Kanchenjunga, they enjoyed Tetulia's peaceful atmosphere, the Dak Bungalow area, and the Mahananda River view.
Normally, Kanchenjunga is visible from the Tetulia Dak Bungalow, Banglabandha Zero Point, Shalbahan, and Sardarpara areas from mid-September when the sky remains clear. Due to overcast weather this year, tourists are visiting plain land tea gardens, Maharaja Dighi, and the historic Bhitargarh Fort City instead.
Local hotels, motels, and guest houses have seen increased bookings, raising expectations of higher income among tourism-related traders and residents.
Jitendra Nath Roy, officer-in-charge of Tetulia Weather Observatory, said upper-level clouds and fog are hiding Kanchenjunga from view. He noted that similar weather may persist for the rest of October, though clear skies in early November could provide a viewing opportunity.
Tetulia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Hossain said authorities have stepped up security monitoring at resorts and major tourist spots. Law enforcement agencies remain alert to prevent harassment and unpleasant incidents.
Although Kanchenjunga remains elusive, tourists continue to enjoy the nature and heritage of Tetulia while waiting for clear morning skies.
