The Election Commission (EC) has settled more than 6.44 million applications for corrections to National Identity Cards (NIDs), out of nearly 6.57 million applications received. A total of 128,010 applications are still pending, while more than 1.35 million have been rejected for various reasons.

The figures are based on data from the EC’s National Identity Registration Wing up to 18 October 2026.

Officials said all applications submitted up to 2024 have been settled, while the process of dealing with applications received in 2025 is almost complete. However, the commission continues to receive around 80,000 to 90,000 new applications every month, leaving some cases pending.

The EC has taken several steps to speed up the process. These include setting deadlines, giving more powers to officials at upazila and district levels, and increasing supervision by senior officials.

The commission is also working to identify and reject unreasonable applications and prevent fraud related to NIDs.

According to EC data, 69,252 applications under category ‘D’ remain pending. Of these, 68,269 were submitted in 2026 and 983 in 2025.
Dhaka has the highest number of pending applications among the regions, with 10,615 cases. Cumilla follows with 10,559.

EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said accuracy was the main priority in dealing with correction requests. He said unreasonable applications were being checked and rejected, while officials were trying to settle every application within the set deadline.

The EC is giving priority to school certificates that can be verified online when considering applications to correct dates of birth.
Under a circular issued on 13 August, applicants can use Junior School Certificate (JSC), secondary or equivalent examination certificates to seek corrections.

Such applications will fall under category ‘A’ and can be settled by the relevant upazila or thana election officer. However, certificates issued by the Bangladesh Open University will not be accepted under this rule.

The commission has also introduced measures to monitor the work of officials handling applications. Regional election officers will supervise staff under their control.

In addition, at least three applications handled by each officer must be checked at random every month. The findings must then be sent to the relevant authority in a report.
