National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has questioned whether the current parliament will complete its five-year term, accusing the BNP-led government of ignoring public concerns, failing to ensure citizens’ security and undermining the aspirations of the July mass uprising.

He also called for accountability over alleged extortion, constitutional reform, justice for victims of the uprising and measures to address economic grievances.

“Even though an election was held and a new parliament formed after 16 years, the views of the opposition and the voices of the people are being disregarded. Due to the BNP’s two-thirds majority, this parliament can no longer be considered a parliament of the people,” he told journalists on Saturday while distributing leaflets in Jatrabari in the capital.

Referring to an attack on singer Asif Akbar’s vehicle, Nahid alleged that the government had failed to protect citizens. He demanded the resignation of the home minister, accusing him of failing to ensure public security. He also called for the energy minister to step down over what he described as failures in the energy sector.
