Former National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Dr Tasnim Jara has criticised Jamaat-e-Islami over its alleged obstruction of the burial of an 87-year-old man in Pirojpur, questioning what the party would do if it came to power.

In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Jara said Jamaat spoke of justice for its own leaders but appeared unwilling to uphold the same principles for others.

“While in opposition, they are obstructing burial on a person's own homestead. What will they do if all state power is in their hands?” she asked.

Jara said Manik Pashari, an 87-year-old government-gazetted freedom fighter, died around 10:00 AM on Saturday. His family reportedly had to wait anxiously throughout the day amid protests and announcements by local Jamaat leaders opposing his burial in Pirojpur.

According to Jara, a grave initially dug at the family home was filled in by some people. His daughter, Simu Akter, later helped dig another grave with female relatives, as others were reportedly unwilling to help amid fears of a worsening situation.

Pashari was eventually buried after midnight under police protection in the grave dug by his daughter and female relatives, Jara said, adding that no one outside the family was present apart from administration officials.

Jara said an assistant secretary of Jamaat's Pirojpur district unit had claimed that Pashari was a fake freedom fighter and should neither receive a guard of honour nor be buried in Pirojpur.

She argued that questions about someone's freedom fighter status should be resolved through state institutions and the courts, rather than by obstructing a burial.

“After death, a person's worldly accounts are settled. What remains is for Allah to judge,” she wrote, lamenting that Pashari's family had been denied the opportunity to hold his funeral prayers in his village and seek forgiveness from the community.

Jara also criticised what she described as Jamaat leaders' attempts to determine who qualifies as a freedom fighter, who deserves state honours and where a person may be buried.

She concluded that the party's stated commitments to justice, human rights, due process and human dignity should apply to everyone, not only its own leaders.
