Bangladesh’s stock market extended its losing streak on Monday (October 26), as broad-based selling pressure dragged down share prices across most sectors, pulled the benchmark index lower and weakened turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).
The DSEX shed 33 points to close at 5,399, while the DSE-30 index fell 10 points to 2,090. The DSE Shariah index also lost seven points to settle at 1,053, reflecting broad-based weakness in the market.
Market breadth remained firmly negative, with 252 issues declining against 74 advancing, while 58 remained unchanged. Banking, insurance and other sectoral stocks came under selling pressure, weighing on the overall market performance.
DSE turnover dropped to Tk 410.57 crore from Tk 430.72 crore in the previous session, indicating a slowdown in trading activity amid persistent bearish sentiment.
Prime Bank topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 18.48 crore changing hands, followed by BRAC Bank at Tk 18.03 crore and Saiham Textile at Tk 15.74 crore.
The bearish trend also prevailed on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), where 97 issues declined against 50 gainers. The CASPI index fell 22 points, although turnover edged up to Tk 16.42 crore from Tk 16.12 crore in the previous session.
The market has remained under pressure since trading resumed on Sunday (October 25), following the Durga Puja holidays. Monday’s session marked the second consecutive decline, as selling pressure continued to outweigh buying interest.
