Islamic Movement Bangladesh has expressed concern over Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir’s remarks that police would not hesitate to carry out crossfire killings if authorised by the government and deemed necessary.
In a statement on Monday, the party’s Secretary General Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman said the remarks amounted to an official admission that targeted killings by police were being described as “crossfire”.
He said the comments recalled the police practices of the ousted fascist regime and stressed that the police could not engage in human rights violations even if instructed by the government.
He added that following government orders to violate the law and human rights had contributed to the country’s suffering under the previous regime, and such an attitude remained unacceptable after the mass uprising.
