Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has condemned IGP Ali Hossain Fakir’s remarks that police could resort to crossfire with government approval.

In a statement on Monday, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman demanded the withdrawal of the remarks, a formal explanation, an unconditional apology and the IGP’s removal.

He said government approval could not legalise extrajudicial killings, stressing that police must investigate crimes and bring accused persons to justice through legal procedures.

TIB also sought clarification over the contradiction between the IGP’s remarks and the law minister’s earlier statement ruling out crossfire to combat terrorism.

The organisation stressed that police use of force must be lawful, necessary and proportionate.
