Five people were killed and four others critically injured when a speeding lorry ran over a group of stranded bus passengers in the Kumira Royal Gate area of Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong late Tuesday night (October 27).
The incident occurred around 1:00 AM on Wednesday (October 28) along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Two of the deceased have been identified as six-year-old Ibrahim and a woman named Swapna, both hailing from Netrokona. Police are working to verify the identities of the remaining victims.
According to police and local sources, the victims were passengers on a Netrokona-bound bus departing from Chittagong. When the bus developed a mechanical fault near Kumira, the passengers stepped off the vehicle and were waiting by the roadside.
A fast-approaching lorry lost control and hit the group, killing three people on the spot.
Two others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
Four injured passengers were rescued from the scene and admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment. Local authorities and police have seized the vehicle involved in the accident.
