Police on Tuesday (October 27) night arrested a man for allegedly beating his father to death with a wooden stick over a family dispute and drug money at Saitalia village in Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur.
The arrestee, identified as Anwar Hossain, had been in hiding since the incident on Sunday (October 25) morning. Locals caught him around 10:00PM on Tuesday when he went to a neighbour’s house to charge his mobile phone, subsequently handing him over to law enforcement.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam confirmed the arrest on Tuesday night, stating that local residents detained the suspect and notified the police. He added that Anwar was brought to the police station and will be produced before a court on Wednesday (October 28).
Tanjim Ahmed Pushpo, a relative of the deceased, said police and family members had been searching for Anwar following the murder. When he visited a nearby home to charge his phone, residents alerted neighbors, chased him down as he attempted to flee, and tied him to a tree until police arrived.
According to police and local sources, Anwar repeatedly struck his father, Abdus Samad, on the head and chest with a wooden stick around 5:00AM on Sunday following an altercation stemming from family disputes and demands for drug money, resulting in Samad's death on the spot.
Following the murder, the victim's brother, Kamrul Islam, filed a murder case with Sreepur Police Station. Police subsequently visited the scene, prepared an inquest report, and collected physical evidence for investigation.
