Twelve volunteers dressed in plastic and other waste staged a symbolic campaign at Cox’s Bazar beach on Wednesday to raise awareness about plastic pollution and marine conservation.
Organised by Bidyanondo Foundation with support from the district administration, the campaign took place at Sugandha Point on October 28. The volunteers wore plastic bottles, plates and electronic waste to highlight the harmful effects of pollution.
Earlier, a procession involving more than 200 students, environmental activists and civil society representatives started from Laboni Point.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan, who led the procession, said at least one million tourists had visited the beach over the past 10 days. Plastic waste left by visitors was contributing to marine pollution, he added.
Bidyanondo Foundation Director Jamal Uddin said the initiative aimed to demonstrate how plastic waste harms the environment and biodiversity.
On October 12, the foundation inaugurated a 50-foot sculpture made from waste at Sugandha Point as part of its efforts to raise awareness.
Organisers urged tourists to use dustbins, reduce single-use plastics and help keep the beach clean.
