Dear Sir,
The arbitrary increase in long-distance bus fares during Eid, Puja and other holidays has become a recurring burden for passengers, particularly those from lower- and middle-income families. Despite government regulations, some transport operators charge two or three times the prescribed fares. They also suspend online ticket sales and set prices arbitrarily at bus terminals, leaving passengers with few alternatives.
Gabtoli, one of Dhaka’s largest bus terminals, remains a concern, as transport workers reportedly continue this practice without effective administrative intervention. Although transport owners cite rising fuel prices and operating costs, these expenses cannot justify excessive fare hikes.
Therefore, the authorities must strengthen monitoring, particularly during holiday seasons. Regular inspections, clearly displayed fare lists and prompt action against overcharging can protect passengers. Moreover, transport operators who violate regulations must face accountability, while unfit buses must remain off the roads. Passengers deserve fair fares, safe journeys and effective protection from exploitation.
