Around 200 passengers aboard a residential cruise ship have been stranded in Cambodia after soaring fuel costs forced its operator to suspend the vessel’s global voyage.

The US-operated MV Odyssey, run by Villa Vie Residences, arrived at Sihanoukville port on October 23 with 203 passengers and 156 crew members. The ship was scheduled to continue to Vietnam.

The company cited sharply rising fuel expenses linked to the Iran war, saying monthly fuel costs per cabin had surged from an average of $1,800 to an estimated $6,000–$8,000 in parts of Asia.

Passengers were given only seven hours to leave the ship, according to Cambodian officials. Some have departed by air, while others remain in the port city facing uncertainty over their accommodation and travel plans.

Villa Vie Residences said it was working to arrange temporary accommodation and explore financial restructuring options.

The Odyssey began its around-the-world voyage from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024, offering passengers the option to live aboard the ship while travelling internationally.
