Spain’s football federation (RFEF) has postponed 24 first-round Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday following a deadly train crash that killed at least 64 people and injured several others.
The accident occurred in Toledo province on Wednesday when two high-speed trains collided, with one train crashing into the rear of another that was stationary. The incident also disrupted rail services between Madrid and Andalusia, affecting travel plans for several teams.
In a statement, the RFEF said all Wednesday’s matches had been postponed as a mark of respect and solidarity with those killed and affected by the tragedy. New dates for the postponed fixtures will be announced later.
Wednesday’s schedule included matches involving La Liga clubs Real Betis, Valencia, Celta Vigo, Levante and Deportivo Alaves. Real Betis were due to face Navalcarnero, while Valencia were scheduled to play Tavernes de la Valldigna.
Thursday’s scheduled matches are expected to go ahead as planned for now.
