West Indies captain Roston Chase has set his sights on a series sweep after his side recovered from an early setback to secure an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the opening Test in Mirpur on Saturday.
The visitors chased down a target of 170 in just 35.1 overs, with Brandon King scoring an unbeaten 81 and Kavem Hodge remaining not out on 31. The result gave West Indies a 1-0 lead ahead of the second and final Test in Sylhet, beginning on November 5.
Chase said winning both Tests had been the team's objective from the outset, with the prospect of improving their position in the World Test Championship standings providing additional motivation.
"We came here with a goal to win these two test matches to go up in the rankings," Chase said after the victory.
The West Indies captain also praised his players for refusing to give up after Bangladesh secured a 27-run first-innings lead.
"Even though we didn't have a good start in the first innings, we were still determined to come and fight back and try to win the game," he said. "I just really want to commend the guys for the fight that we showed."
That fightback was built largely around the visitors' spin attack. Jomel Warrican claimed nine wickets in the match, including five in Bangladesh's first innings, while Chase took five for 36 in the second innings to help dismiss the hosts for 142.
Warrican was named player of the match, but Chase's contribution with both bat and ball proved equally important in shifting the contest.
Bangladesh had appeared well placed after scoring 272 in their first innings, with Shadman Islam making 105. However, their second-innings collapse left the visitors with a modest target, despite Nayeem Hasan's fighting 52.
West Indies now have an opportunity to complete the sweep in Sylhet. For Bangladesh, the second Test will be a chance to respond after a defeat that exposed their inability to turn a first-innings advantage into a match-winning position.
