Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed a high-yielding rice variety, BRRI dhan (paddy)119, offering new prospects for increasing rice production in the country's salinity-prone coastal regions.
The variety is suitable for transplanted Aman cultivation and can be grown on both saline and non-saline land.
It matures in just 115 days and produces between 4.8 tonnes and 7.6 tonnes per hectare (ha), depending on soil salinity levels.
National Seed Board (NSB) granted final approval for the variety on October 28 for cultivation during the Aman season. A national technical committee has also recommended it for Boro cultivation, although final approval from the NSB is still pending.
