Crowd demolishes Jamaat leader’s house after video goes viral

An angry crowd demolished the house of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Sunday after a video allegedly showing him in an objectionable situation with a woman went viral on social media.

The incident took place around noon in Nilkhi Union. The man, identified as Taizul Islam, was the president of the union Jamaat-e-Islami unit before being relieved of his post following the circulation of the video.

According to local sources and a video circulated on social media, Taizul was allegedly caught in an objectionable situation with a woman at his residence on October 25. The incident triggered tension in the area after the video spread across Facebook accounts and groups.

Local residents, both men and women, later gathered and demolished his house on Sunday.

Locals also alleged that Taizul had long been providing purported treatments through water-blessing rituals and exorcism while claiming to resolve various problems faced by women in the area.

Attempts to contact Taizul over the phone went unanswered. Shibchar upazila Jamaat Ameer Sarwar Hossain Mridha also could not be reached for comment.
