Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has alleged that elements from across the border are instigating unrest in the country's garment sector to disrupt production and export trade.

He said the government would take a tough stance against attempts to use innocent garment workers to create instability and undermine the country's economy.

The minister made the remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Sunday.

"We have noticed that masked individuals are joining different stages of the protests to serve their own interests. We are analysing the information available to us. Some people are instigating unrest from across the border by using innocent garment workers to disrupt our export trade and factory production," he said.

Salahuddin said those involved in violent activities had already been brought under the law and that police and other law enforcement agencies would take strict action against any further attempts to create disorder.

He said the government wanted peace, discipline and continued economic progress, adding that it also wanted the garment industry to expand and strengthen the country's export sector.

The minister claimed that genuine garment workers and legitimate workers' organisations were not involved in the violent protests.

He said workers should resolve their demands through discussions, noting that representatives had been nominated and a minimum wage board had already been formed to determine a new wage structure.

Referring to the prime minister's instructions, Salahuddin said the government had directed the Labour Ministry and the wage board to ensure workers' interests were protected and their living standards improved.

The minister also urged garment factory owners to keep their factories operational and maintain production to avoid disruptions to exports.

He said some factories might have been temporarily closed due to concerns over the situation but expressed hope that the closures would be resolved within the day.

He added that the prime minister had emphasised protecting workers' interests while ensuring that production and export growth were not disrupted.

Salahuddin said law enforcement agencies had been instructed to take strict action against those involved in violence, disorder or attempts to create instability.

"No one will be able to obstruct Bangladesh's development, progress and export growth," he said.
