It may take up to 15 days for the fire triggered by a gas blowout at a deep well in Chhota Inani of Cox's Bazar to subside, Petrobangla has said.

The fire broke out on October 27 when gas erupted from underground during drilling operations at a depth of around 1,000 feet near Chhota Inani Bridge in Jaliapalong Union of Ukhiya Upazila.

According to a Petrobangla press release issued on Sunday, two geologists from the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) have been sent to monitor the situation. They are currently stationed in Cox's Bazar to oversee developments.

On the advice of experts, the gas is being allowed to escape freely to prevent the fire from spreading. The intensity of the blaze is expected to gradually decline over the next 15 days.

If the gas flow does not decrease within this period, the expert team will take alternative measures, including firefighting operations and steps to stop the flow, the release said.

As a precautionary measure, public access within a 100-metre radius of the well has been prohibited. Local authorities have also taken necessary steps to maintain law and order.

Petrobangla, BAPEX and the local administration are jointly monitoring the situation round the clock.

Meanwhile, geological and 2D seismic surveys are underway to assess the potential gas reserves in the surrounding area.

Petrobangla has urged people not to panic, remain cautious and cooperate with the authorities.
