Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom has invited Singaporean companies to invest in oil and gas exploration and extraction across Bhola and other offshore coastal regions of Bangladesh.
The Speaker extended the invitation during a courtesy meeting with Non-Resident High Commissioner of Singapore to Bangladesh, Derek Loh, at the Speaker’s office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Monday (November 2).
Highlighting the bilateral relationship, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed described Singapore as a warm, friendly, and key economic partner for Bangladesh, lauding the country’s transformation into a prosperous global hub under the visionary leadership of Lee Kuan Yew.
Focus on Investment, Democratic Transition, and Trade
The Speaker noted that the July 2024 mass uprising brought an end to authoritarian rule and ushered in a renewed democratic journey for Bangladesh, pointing to the 13th National Parliamentary Election as one of the most free, fair, and credible elections in the nation's history.
Stating that seventeen years of autocratic rule had severely disrupted the country's economic trajectory, he emphasized that Singapore could play a vital role in accelerating investment in Bangladesh's emerging markets.
In response, High Commissioner Derek Loh suggested that Bangladesh prioritize the expansion and quality enhancement of technical education across academic institutions to generate sustainable employment for its large youth population.
Pointing to Singapore's economic gains from shipbuilding and maritime industries–Loh highlighted that Bangladesh could similarly reap substantial economic benefits by expanding its shipbuilding sector and establishing modern dry docks.
During the meeting, both sides also exchanged views on bilateral trade, expansion of the readymade garment sector, exchange of parliamentary delegations, activities of the Constitution Reform Commission, educational standards, and reforms in public and civil service recruitment examinations.
High-ranking officials, including representatives from the Singapore Embassy and the Secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat, were present at the meeting.
