Fresh clashes broke out between readymade garment (RMG) workers and law enforcement in Dhaka's Mirpur on Monday (November 2) as workers attempted to break through a police barricade near Mirpur Model Police Station and march toward the Mirpur-10 roundabout.

During the chaotic confrontation, protesters set fire to a police vest and pelted brickbats at security forces. Police responded with baton charges, tear gas shells, and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, temporarily turning the area into a battleground as fleeing workers took shelter in nearby alleys.

Law enforcement personnel detained several individuals from the spot, alongside another suspect from Mirpur-11.

DMP Warns against Sabotage as 29 Arrested

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) cautioned that a third party is attempting to exploit the ongoing labor demonstrations to incite violence and sabotage.

"We remain on high alert to ensure that miscreants cannot cause public suffering or resort to vandalism under the guise of worker protests. Heavy police contingents have been deployed, and 29 individuals have been arrested so far under the Mirpur Division," stated Joint Police Commissioner of DMP Mohidul Islam.

Massive security perimeters were established across Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, and surrounding neighborhoods from Monday morning to prevent further escalation, with additional police units stationed at key intersections.

The renewed violence comes amid a two-day protest by garment workers demanding an increase in the monthly minimum wage from Tk 12,500 to Tk 30,000.

In response to the growing unrest, the Ministry of Labour formed a six-member Minimum Wage Board on Sunday, November 1, to review and restructure the wage frame.
